Chan-(tli): a Nahuatl word for house or dwelling
My name is Sarai and I’m the founder of I Love Chantli. I was born in sunny San Diego and raised between the USA and Tijuana Baja California. My love for creating comes from spending countless hours in my mom’s garden making mud cakes. At a young age, I discovered that working with my hands and forming one of a kind art using mostly organic and unconditional materials, such as dirt, has always been my passion and connects to me to the Earth and my inner child. I’ve pulled my inspiration and admiration of ceramics from other potters such as Eric Landon, Lalese Stamps, and Lydia Hardwick. It’s always been a passion of mine but it wasn’t until COVID that I found the time to truly dedicate and explore the art. I took the first leap and enrolled in a ceramics course at San Diego City College, where I learned the fundamentals under the teachings of interdisciplinary artist Brian Benfer.
As a ceramicist, my goal is combined the two worlds I grew up with, the traditional Mexican artesania and the modern anglo art; both colliding to help make objects that will turn a house into a home - whether that be with a round shape handle mug and a set of plates, or a one-of-a-kind vase and decorative ornaments. All made with love by a Latina living in the Midwest.
